Sustainable Design Assessment

Many councils have planning policies that require developments to demonstrate their environmental performance against a range of criteria through Sustainable Design Assessment (SDA). Tools such as Sustainable Tools for Environmental Performance Strategy (STEPS) and the Sustainable Design Scorecard (SDS) were developed to provide consistency across assessments.

The Built Environment Sustainability Scorecard (BESS) is a new, more comprehensive and efficient tool that has been developed alongside more ambitious policies recently adopted by several Melbourne Councils. SDA’s are now required to be submitted along with planning proposals for small through to large residential and commercial developments. It is likely that new legislation will make this a mandatory requirement across the state in the future.

What is Environmentally Sustainable Design?

Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) ensures that you get the most benefit from the site you have selected for your development. It will save you money on operating costs, improve internal environment quality (IEQ) for health, increases productivity and reduces your ecological impact.

Your Home provides detailed information about environmentally sustainable housing.

The National House Energy Rating Scheme NatHERS allows new and existing designs to be modelled to determine energy use. Through the use of the Firstrate software tool, modifications to materials and design can be explored to increase the energy efficiency of a building.

Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) aims to reduce the amount of water used, maximise the use of rain fall on your site and ensure that run off is delayed, reduced and treated to improve the quality of our waterways and ocean environments.
